How To Save Money On Life Insurance
If you are trying to pay off debts, then life insurance is probably the last thing on your mind.
Adding an extra payment each month doesn't sound like the best way to cut back, does it? But,
while life insurance may seem like a pointless expense, it is worth thinking about what it would
be like if something were to happen to you.
If you have a partner or family, would they be able to cope paying off all the debts you have left
behind? Apart from unpaid debts, there may also be only the one income in the household to pay
day-to-day expenses. And what about funeral costs?
We all know it's unpleasant to think about all the bad things that could happen, but in the end, it
can be a good idea to plan for them. Here are some common questions on life insurance – and
some ways to save money as well.
What is life insurance?
When you buy life insurance, you agree to pay a certain amount in monthly or annual premiums,
in return for a payout should something happen to you. There are many different types of life
insurance – from the standard life insurance that pays out a lump sum upon death, to income
protection insurance, which can provide regular payments if become sick or injured and can no
longer work. Find out more about what types of insurance are available so you can choose the
right one for you. Individual insurance provider websites are a great place to start. Click here for an example of one provider’s policy document section.
Why would I need life insurance?
If you have debts or dependents then getting life insurance can be a great choice. Life insurance
can pay off debts, it can offer financial assistance to loved ones left behind, and it can make an
emotional time less of a burden by taking money worries out of the equation.
How much cover do I need?
The level of cover you need will depend on a number of factors. Think about how much debt you
have – your mortgage, credit cards, personal loans, student loans, car loans, and so on. Also think
about your dependents and what they will need – day-to-day living costs, school fees, medical
costs, college tuition. If you are unsure how much cover you need, you can use an online life
insurance calculator, or you could speak to an insurance expert.
How do I choose the right insurer?
Check out review sites online to find out what other people recommend. Try to choose an insurer
that has an “A” rating or above.
How do I compare policies?
Using an online comparison site is a great way of narrowing down your options. You can
compare each policy side-by-side, and then make a shortlist of the best options. Always read the
terms and conditions in full – this is very important! - to make sure you get the most suitable policy for you.
How can I save money on life insurance?
You could get healthy to lower your premiums – stop smoking, get more exercise, lower your
cholesterol or blood pressure. You can shop around to make sure you get the best deal. You can
do some extra research to make sure you get the right policy. You can speak to an adviser to
make sure you are not over-insured or under-insured. You can buy online to get discounts and
offers.
There are many ways to save money on life insurance. It doesn't have to be expensive, and it
may be a lot cheaper than you think. Take some time to find out your options, and think about
whether it is the right choice for you.

Christmas with the Frugals: Guest Post from Melanie at Think Money
Rather than blowing your bank balance this Christmas, why not have a frugal festive season? Although this doesn't actually sound possible - it is! Christmas can cost you a fraction of the price, and you can do just as much as you normally do - parties, celebrations, etc!
And here's how…
Shopping list
Ever go to the store not knowing what you're going to buy (or just having a rough idea), and end up coming back with loads of things you didn't need?
The chances are, the answer is yes. So to stop this from happening again, and to stop you from wasting your money, you should create a shopping list.
To create a shopping list, you should search through your cupboards and fridge before you go shopping and note down what you really need to buy.
By creating a list of the things you actually need, you can avoid walking out of the store with things you don't need!
Discount vouchers
If you haven't already discovered the pleasures of using discount vouchers, I suggest you start now!
Discount vouchers are readily available online and can often offer you money off at your favourite retailers. New vouchers are constantly being uploaded to voucher websites - you just need to search for 'discount vouchers' on a search engine and take a look at the results.
If you can't find a voucher for the store you are shopping at, don't worry - your local paper may have some in.
Party guests can contribute
If you are holding a Christmas party this year, and are having a few guests over - why not ask them to contribute to the festive celebration?
So, instead of you having to go to the store and buy everything in, you could ask them to bring along some cakes, drinks and other snacks to save you money!

Having a Late Christmas to Save Money
This is a guest post from Michael Caldwell at Use The Dollar.
If you would like to write a guest post for Distilled Rose Personal Finance, simply contact me!
Michael Caldwell is a lifelong entrepreneur who has become active in the Financial world. As he experiments and finds working methods to building wealth, he shares them with others.
What it actually becomes for many of us, though, is an impoverishing end to the year.
How can we fix this?
The Problem
Any time that retailers can predict hundreds of millions of people rushing to the stores in unison- I can promise you- That is not the time to go shopping!Even though everyone knows that it is the very worst season to shop- millions do.
But how can you avoid that? Christmas falls on the same day for everyone. It does it each and every year. But does it have to?
The Solution
Change the Day your family celebrates Christmas! What if your family celebrated Christmas on the 28th instead of the 25th?
What if you could take advantage of the post-Christmas sales that nearly every retailer offers?!
The day is close enough to the standard Christmas day that you'll be able to take advantage of everyone elses' Christmas parties, keep the sense of the season, etc.
Aren't you losing the meaning of the Season?
For those of you who are concerned about changing the day because you want to preserve the integrity of Christ's birth, you should be celebrating much earlier.
Israeli meteorologists best guess places the real date of Christ's birth on September 29th, 5 B.C.
The Catholic writer Mario Righetti candidly admit that, "to facilitate the acceptance of the faith by the pagan masses, the Church of Rome found it convenient to institute the 25th of December as the feast of the birth of Christ to divert them from the pagan feast, celebrated on the same day in honor of the 'Invincible Sun' Mithras, the conqueror of darkness" (Manual of Liturgical History, 1955, Vol. 2, P. 67).
So if Christ wasn't born on "Christmas Day", and there's no other real motivating factor to keeping your family's Christmas on the 25th, then there are only two reasons you would celebrate on the 25th:
- You're a huge fan of keeping to Pagan-Fooling, Roman Tradition
- You enjoy spending far more money than you need to spend.
If either of those qualifications fit you- Feel free- Go ahead and continue celebrating on December 25th.
If not though- Make the smart decision and move it back a few days. Purchase your gifts during the sales- Save hundreds, if not thousands- and have a Merry Christmas!!!!

What is Passive Income and How Do I Get Started?
This is a guest post from Scott at The Passive Dad. Scott runs a great personal finance blog focused on his success with Passive Income and filled with great advice on how you can follow in his footsteps.
If you would like to submit a guest post to Distilled Rose, please feel free to contact me!
What is Passive Income and How Do I Get Started?
You might already own a passive form of income and not even know it. Actually, you don't own it, the bank does. Banks earn income from your mortgage payments in the form of interest. If you are a landlord, you also are earning passive income on your apartment or rental house. Basically, passive income is derived from investments that require little to no work. They can require a basic investment, but the maintenance and time requirement are very minimal.
Getting to the point where you have several thousand dollars to invest in real estate may be a huge step for you.
How do you start out earning passive income then? Well, it's actually easier than you think. Start with something you love and are passionate about. If you don't have a passion, think of something you would love to do if you won the lotto. Got it? Great, now write it down. Is this something you would like to research and maybe tell others about? This is how your passion can become passive income. You have so many tools available that if you are truly passionate, the passive income will follow. Let's say you are passionate about raising horses. If you won the lotto tomorrow, let's say you would want to move to Kentucky and buy a large horse ranch. You would still need to research real estate, horses, land, breeding, etc right? Now is the time to write about it and teach others about your passion.
Utilize any of the following to start turning your passion into a passive income stream:
-Create a blog for free on blogger, typepad, or wordpress
-Write an ebook
-Create a Squidoo page
Want a really easy way to start earning passive income quickly? This will help you understand how passive income works and the importance of network marketing your ideas and passions. You are already shopping online and in stores, so you might as well earn some money for your efforts right? Join BigCrumbs and start earning passive income today!
I hope you have a passion that gets you excited and fired up. If you don't, use that lotto example and think of what you would do with your winnings. Think about it and start writing your way to passive income today.
