Why Are Cell Phones So Expensive?

Here's a question. Why are cell phones so expensive? I have a family plan which I've always thought was reasonable, but now that we have two iPhones, one of which is a new 3G, our cell phone bill is very high. We are paying an extra $50 a month and I am starting to wonder if it's really worth it. I love my iPhone but it's a ridiculous expense. I really don't get why a data plan costs so much.
Any ideas?

I don't have the iphone but have the Samsung Blackjack through ATT, and wonder the same thing about the data plan. ATT lowered my data plan from $40 to $30 a month, but it's still high. I actually don't use it that much, and am considering stopping the data service. I would love to have an iphone, but it's hard to justify the cost right now. I'm envious of those that have one:)

My husband would love to have an iPhone, but knows it would be too expensive. Right now he's looking for anything that would give him another free phone. We currently each have a RAZR V3, which we got for free.
